List of World Currency

In today's world currency is important aspects of our life.  Almost every country has their own currency. In earlier days trading happens mainly through the commodity exchange (eg: - Spices traded for Gold, Silver etc.). Though the existence of coins & notes prevailing from earlier days reported in history during the period of 7th century B.C. The importance of currency become unavoidable during the advancement of civilization and the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century.  

Trading between countries including import & export started through an exchange of currency. Even the trading within the country is also happening through currency. Each country establishes their own monetary system to regularize their currency. The foremost thing controlling the country currency value based on Supply & demand. Other parameters include Market Sentiments, Speculation, Inflation, Interest rates, central bank policy & Political changes. If we are traveling to a country other than our homeland then we need to have that particular country currency.

There are around 180 currencies around the world recognized by the United Nation. The oldest currency in the world is British Pound since the 8^th century. South Sudanese Pound is the latest currency to be officially accepted on July 18, 2011. The biggest currency note is of Philippines with 8.5 inches in wide and 14 inches long. The banknote Romania is 1.75 inches to 1.3 inches which are the tiniest currency note. Around 19 countries in the world are using Euros as their currency and 22 countries of 180 countries use the Dollar as their national currency.

The US dollar is considered the strongest currency in the world.Earlier countries were using the Gold standard but in the year 1944, worlds developed countries met in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire and made the Bretton Woods agreement. According to the agreement, the dollar was considered as the strongest currency of the world. At that period, the US had the highest gold reserves and the dollar was backed by gold which gives them an upper hand. US dollar is the world’s most traded currency with a share of 47% in the global payments and a daily forex market turnover of 87%.

The Euro is in second place with 33% of forex transactions daily and with an international bank payment of 28%. Each currency has their own code which is formed by countries two-character internet country code and currency unit. In the table below are the list of different currency in the world.
